Banjo-Tooie Picks up where Banjo-Kazooie left off, Gruntilda under a boulder and Klungo uselessly trying to get her out from underneath it. Enter Grunty’s sisters to the rescue bringing her back from the dead…. sort of. Gruntilda immediately starts laying waste to the world and it’s up to Banjo and Kazooie to defeat her!
The sequel builds on the already solid controls and moves from the first game adding a variety of new game mechanics that are required to progress. Levels are much bigger this time around with a variety of environments to explore. Item collection in this game is simplified with stacks of eggs, notes and feathers making it less time consuming to re-charge Banjo & Kazooie’s abilities.
The new move sets are spread out through different levels causing you to backtrack constantly to complete levels. The Item collection feels like it took a back seat to mini games and missions in this game, This wouldn’t be such a bad thing if item collection wasn’t what made the first game so different from other games.
Banjo-Tooie is a more expansive game than Banjo-Kazooie that leaves you wanting a more straight forward experience. The removal of collect-a-thon when it came to eggs, notes, and feathers both simplified and took away from the game play.
Overall if you enjoyed the first game you will most likely enjoy the sequel as well, It is a lot of fun with enough changes to keep it fresh and minimal frustration.
